A different view point...

As I mentioned in Wednesday's SugarWOD announcement, a question I posed to Lou on our walk gave ME a different perspective on why people are so hesitant to make changes that will improve their quality of life.

Me: "What stops people from making the changes they should make to improve their quality of life? What is the greatest obstacle?"

Lou: "I don't think they know any better or anything different."

Me: 🤔

I'm a bit embarrassed to say... it never dawned on me.  I suppose being immersed in the wellness industry and constantly curious about "what is best for our health" it didn't cross my mind that some folks just don't know.  Well, knowledge is power or wasted opportunities, we get to decide that.

So I am going to share some things that I believe are important for you to know about our lifestyle choices and the pros and cons it has on our wellness.  I will speak in laypersons terms because, to be completely transparent, I'm not that smart.  The information I pass along to you will come from reliable resources who are not trying to make money off of you but rather simply give us the knowledge.  Once we have the knowledge, we decide if we love ourselves enough to modify our behaviors to follow the science.  We need to beat into our brains that our choices have consequences... if they are not immediate, they WILL catch up with us in the long run.

I will not inundate you with all of this information in this one post.  I will spread it out in many posts.

Today, let's talk about our training schedule...

  • "Exercise has the greatest power to determine how you will live out the rest of your life."
  • "Going from zero weekly exercise to just 90-minutes per week can reduce your risk of dying from all causes by 14%" - Dr. Peter Attia
  • Imagine what approximately 300 or 360 minutes of exercise per week could do for you?
This is where I challenge you to think beyond..."it's better than nothing." We absolutely will not be 100% everyday we hit up our exercise.  That isn't what this means.  I want you to work to shift your mindset to expecting yourself to workout 5-6 days a week.  Nope, you may not get to the gym all those days but you CAN exercise outside of the gym, I promise, I won't get my feelings hurt.  Exercise for you on those days might be a brisk walk 30-45 minutes.  Or maybe you make up a little body weight sesh with sit-ups, push-ups and air squats.  We want exercise to become as normal to us each day as, a meal is, or sleep is.  We want it to be "something we just do."

Don't go based off of the American Heart Association... by doing what we do, we already put their suggestion to shame.  They are talking to the folks who we are just trying to get off the couch.  You are beyond that.

There WILL be times where your body speaks to you about needing that two-rest-day week.  That is perfectly acceptable.  That is very different from simply not feeling like going to the gym.  And even on those days where your body feels a bit beat up... a walk is often the great healer.  Discipline is the separator between healthy and unhealthy on the wellness spectrum.

This shit is hard.  If it weren't we would live in a MUCH healthier world.  There are so many perks to building this habit of consistent exercise, AND upping your personal expectations of it.  Not just physical, but the mental and emotional are just as potent.

Will you get your 5-6 days this week?
