Alcohol.... this one is going to hurt.
The realities of alcohol from Dr. Attia:
"Alcohol should have it's own macronutrient category because it is so widely consumed. It has such potent effects on our metabolism, and it is so calorically dense at 7 calories/gram (closer to the 9 calories/g of fat than the 4 calories/g of protein and carbohydrates)."
"Alcohol serves no nutritional or health purpose but is purely a hedonic pleasure that needs to be managed. It's especially disruptive for people who are overnourished, for three reasons: it's an "empty" calorie source that offers zero nutrition value; the oxidation of ethanol delays fat oxidation, which is the exact opposite of what we want if we're trying to lose fat mass; and drinking alcohol very often leads to mindless eating."
I am fortunate/unfortunate to come from a long line of alcoholics. Early on in life I made the decision I would never touch the stuff, or anything that would affect my decision making for that matter. So I can't relate to how many of us enjoy the buzz or relaxing effects alcohol has on us. I can relate to the enjoyment of a decadent treat but that doesn't really affect my brain. 😂 If you can zoom in on the full page of text above, read through it all...
I think we all do shit we know isn't the best for us to different degrees, but I am hopeful that the realities of over consuming alcohol finds a way to hit home for many of us. Simply putting parameters on this part of your nutrition and diet will have a very positive impact on your wellness journey. Which brings me to encouraging everyone to be SUPPORTIVE of one another should they choose to get a better hold on this part of their life. Take a bit of time to reflect... do your relationships revolve around alcohol? Is it a necessity to having a good time? If a friend says they are not drinking for the night, do you celebrate them or try to entice them to join you drinking? This could make some of us uncomfortable to think about, but it is reality and needs to be addressed.
I am not equipped to counsel or coach anyone through this, but I am very damn willing to try to find someone who is to help any of you.
